The books, according to Ginny, were just as she said. Invoices, although paid, were several months behind in being entered. But she was delighted. This was something she loved doing.

Ellen brought tea and a blueberry scone with clotted cream in later, and sat down for a few minutes.

“Hello, Maddie. I didn’t get to see you much at breakfast. I’m Ellen. I do some specialty cooking for the guests. And,” she leaned forward, lowering her voice, “I’m so glad you’ve changed positions. I can’t imagine anyone having to work with Teri.”

Maddie was unsure what to say. “It’s nice to meet you too. And thank you for the heads up.”

“Well, if you’d left, you wouldn’t have been the first. She’s sabotaged several girls who came for the summers. And even though you aren’t working with her, I’ll give you something else to watch for,” she said, glancing back toward the door. “Teri could best be described as territorial. She’s got her eye on the boss. Ginny doesn’t see it, but I do. Watch your back, and don’t take your eyes off her for a minute. Remember that. Even now that you’re in a different job.”

“Thank you, Ellen. I really appreciate you telling me. And the scone is just delicious.”

Ellen patted her on the shoulder. “We’ll get some meat on your bones yet. You’ll see.”

Maddie watched her leave, not quite knowing how to respond. When the office was empty again, she gave off a soft giggle. Her devastating morning had turned into a lovely and perfect afternoon. And the job she’d been given to do was one knew she’d love.

She bit her lip with a sigh. She’d win over Teri yet.
